Matt Nichols – South Central LA – 11/22/2013

Matt Nichols is a recent transplant to Los Angeles. He received his MFA in 2010 from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and his BA in 2003 at University of California, Berkeley. He has his own production/fabrication shop set up in the front half of his studio and is sculptor. He works with all kinds of material: wood, metal plating, foam, and found objects. He enjoys the trickery or misdirection he can impose on materials by making things seem to be not what they are. This allows him to insert his sense of humor into the work. He aims for a precise-ness in his forms and everything is carefully considered.  In 2012, he had a show at LVL3 Gallery in Chicago and they published an interview with Matt that discusses his process and materials:
