Amanda Mears – Baldwin Hills – 08/27/2013

Amanda Mears was a documentary filmmaker.  She has a keen eye for interior and exterior space and translates that into collaged paintings.  She has also been cataloging street “furniture” such as trash cans, telephone booths, newspaper boxes, fire hydrants, etc.—items that are often overlooked.  She is originally from England where, as Mears shared, there are no public trash cans or fire hydrants like the ones you see in Los Angeles and other American cities.  She also pointed out that items like telephone booths and newspaper stands are quickly becoming part of the past, and that it is only a matter of time before they disappear.  Mears’ projects have a lot of research that goes into them; and like her documentary work, she is interested in capturing a narrative tied to time and place.
