The Differend. Phrases in Dispute (1983)

by Jean-François Lyotard

Part One. The Historical Content”  was posted on April 25, 2014.

The discussion of this significant book, “The Differend,” published in 1983 examines the political context of this book, which signaled a shift away from Marxism and towards a long protracted dialogue with the philosophers Emmanuel Kant and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Lyotard continued his re-writing of Wittgenstein’s concept of “language games” and realized that these games could be configured in such a way to silence one party. His prime example of a silenced victim was the Holocaust. This post discusses the ways in which the Holocaust, an unrepresentable “event” was both approached and denied.
