Art History Unstuffed. Postmodernism and the Trail of the Floating Signifier

THEORIES OF THE POSTMODERN

Part Three of a Six Part series on Theories of the Postmodern, Postmodernism and the Trail of the Floating Signifier, was posted on February 21, 2014. The post discusses the introduction of pluralism into philosophy, a linguistic critique of the idea of a fixed meaning, now disrupted by the “floating signifier.”

The new ideal in Postmodernism was not elitism but difference–the free-floating signifiers, signifiers emancipated from the tyranny of the referent, both the sign and the signified.
