DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH
Part Five of Five Part series on Michel Foucault, Michel Foucault: Discipline and Punish was posted on January 31, 2014. An influential book, Discipline and Punish discussed how in the 18th century, modern society shifted from “punishment” to “discipline” as a way to control growing populations. This series can also be accessed through with Heathwood Press, an English journal of philosophy, where Dr. Willette is a contributing writer.
Discipline and Punish is the middle step between the Archaeology of Knowledge and the three volume The History of Sexuality, published just a year later, which can be read as the journey of Foucault from the way in which discourses were formed to the impact of those discourses. The reentry into is a re-visiting of the question of the formation of the “subject” and Foucault’s “historical a priori” shifted from mechanics to application.
