The Little Friends of Printmaking visited the Comic and Print I class this past week and regaled us with tales of how they started their amazing design and printmaking business. JW and Melissa Buchanan founded their business in Madison, Wisconsin and made the move to LA last year setting up shop over in Pasadena.
They brought in many of their hand-printed silkscreen posters for us to check out. They both majored in Printmaking at University of Wisconsin Madison, known for it’s excellent printmaking program and Tandem Press and it shows. They’ve got some skills! One of our professors could not quite grasp that all of the prints were printed by hand by choice. No machines pulling these prints!
I loved how they started the business by doing posters for bands they liked and when the bands went on the road, they did too with their own art, getting in touch with local arts organizations and galleries to show and sell their work. They stressed always fitting in some time to make your own personal work in addition to work for clients. That will often help to grow and shift your style, while always keeping you ready to work on something you love.
Many of my images are from their projected presentation and are a little faded so be sure and check out their excellent website.
