Vision LA ’15 : Climate Action Arts Festival – online exhibition day nine

Although the Communication Arts department does not explicitly offer classes that focus on sustainability, many of the students recognize the power of graphic design and advertising to influence culture towards making positive changes.

Matthew Velarde’s advertising designs focussed on issues of health and safety in food and cleaning products.

Melvin Alvarez‘s work was made in response to the many years of flooding in his home country of the Philippines. His Flood Preparedness Kit was a Core 77 Design Awards runner up.

Inspired by the movie Blackfish and her experience observing whales in her home of Vancouver, Canada, Heather Ellison’s mock newspaper, The Orca Independent, imagines  a world in which orcas can speak for themselves.
