Architecture/Landscape/Interiors (A/L/I) Seniors began Studio 5: Public/UrbanArchitecture with an “Architectural Ride.”
A/L/I Seniors Rex Crafts, Diana Gonong, Shadi Hashemi, Suan Jaen, Merve Onur, Jusung Park, Cynthia Soto, Izzy Savage and Nyann Swain-Welborn presented their components of “Architectural Ride” to jurors Thomas Mahler (Production Designer, ANIMUS STUDIOS, M.Arch GSD ’94), Andrew Ratzsch (AIA, Principal, Ratzsch Architects, M.Arch UCLA ’96), and their instructor, A/L/I Senior Lecturer, Matias Creimer.
“Architectural Ride” was a 3-week warm-up for the Studio 5 urban infill-building project.
Borrowing language from roller coasters, “Architectural Ride” was a block-long, program-less building made up of interlocking segments connected by a continuous interior path. Each student was responsible for his/her segment with a goal of ensuring that users would remain motivated to walk through the entire structure. Issues of formal and functional adjacency were negotiated between “neighbors.” – Matias Creimer
