2014-2015 Donghia Master Class Blog 1

2014-2015 Donghia Master Class Blog #1Studio mk27, represented by founder Marcio Kogan and manager Mariana Simas, has been leading twelve Architecture/Landscape/Interiors juniors and seniors in a five-day project.

Donghia students (Rex Crafts, Diana Gonong, Amanda Hirsch, Suna Jaen, Yelin Lee, Darien Noguchi, Mina Park, Zhixin Rong, Izzy Savage, Cynthia SotoRaymond Tran, and Kelvin Tseng) began working with Marcio and Mariana on Friday, March 20th. They first organized into teams and chose their project from two options (see below), then presented concepts and narratives at the end of the day. Students continued working under Marcio’s and Mariana’s direction through Tuesday, March 24th, and will present their projects to a jury on Wednesday, March 25th.

Marcio and Mariana proposed two projects, each based on a movie.

Project A
Movie: Playtime by Jacques Tati
Site: a 100’ x 100’ lot between two 400’ tall towers in La Défense, Paris
Program: a house
Client: the “Office Director”

Project B
Movie: The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson
Site: a building in Zubrowka
Program: redesign of Herr Mendl’s Patisserie
Client: Frida Mendl, Mendl’s (hypothetical) granddaughter, in 2015

“Wouldn’t it be a privilege to design for these characters whom we have observed in intimacy? We can only imagine their dreams and dream together with these clients that have allowed us to dream. We will decode their desires and suggest new ways of living.” “It is intended here that the students may exercise little-explored aspects within an academic environment: development of the program, architectural imagination, the poetic element of design and the architectural detail. There do not exist any rigid ties relative to legislation, historical landmarks or urban guidelines. The idea is to offer the students freedom to design.” – studio mk27, 2014-2015 Donghia Designer-in-Residence
