Fall 2016 Charette

Joshua Chang and Sean Lorenz won 1st Place and individual $2000 Awards in the Architecture/Landscape/Interiors (A/L/I) Fall 2016 Charette Competition!

Each semester, A/L/I students participate in a charette, which is a design project completed within a limited amount of time and no prior knowledge of the requirements. Solutions must be presented “by hand,” with no use of computers.

On October 24, 2016, all current A/L/I students, in teams of two or three, spent five hours conceiving, negotiating, drawing, and building models in order to communicate their design solutions for “Interior Politics: A Town Hall Debate Space” to be located in the south-west corner of the 1913 Lloyd’s Bank building in downtown Los Angeles. Students were asked to design a “town hall” type debate venue for national and/or local political candidates, exploring and directing the interaction between voters, politicians, and media in the 21st century.
A jury consisting of A/L/I instructors Gregory Van Grunsven, Felicia Martin, and David Reddy, and a  guest juror, Maren Allen, Designer with Gehry Partners, reviewed the (blind) entries and chose finalist teams. Finalists verbally presented their projects, after which the jury publicly deliberated and determined one 1st, one 2nd, and two 3rd Place-Tie winners.

The first-place winners, Joshua and Sean, each received a $2,000 award courtesy of the OTEFE Foundation!
“The primary purpose of OTEFE Foundation, Inc. (“OTEFE”) is to assist financially needy Korean American students (regardless of citizenship status), overseas Korean students, or other students (non-Korean students who have shown a strong commitment to the betterment of the Korean community) who are faced with financial hardships to pursue their educational dreams at U.S. universities (4-year) or U.S. graduate and professional schools so they can later give back to and better their respective Korean communities.”

Congratulations to Joshua and Sean, and thank you to OTEFE and Dong R. Oh, who initiated this donation!
