Avant-garde Sportswear with Michi

Otis Mentor Michi

“This is my first time making activewear and I love it,” says Fashion junior Magdalena Lee.  “Michi was my first choice as a mentor and I wanted to work with them because I love sport-inspired clothes.”

Fearless pioneer Michi offers fashion forward performance sportswear. Their direction to students is to design avant-garde sportswear with unexpected dual functionality; ultimate performance meets downtown cool.

This was the young designer’s first time using Bemis , a no-sew technology that sets with an iron or heat press. This technique allows the garment to maintain crisp, clean lines, peferct for the red and black color blocking on Lee’s garment.

Inspired by fast movement and flames, Magdalena said her aim was to highlight the movement and curves of the body. She admits, her passion was there from the start. “I’ve always loved fashion, ever since I was little,” she admits, “My Mom taught illustration at Otis, Cynthia Vincent was one of her students, so I always knew about the program.” Cynthia Vincent (’88) is a well-known California designer and fashion alumna, for which Lee has interned.
