J Brand Inspires Suits of Denim

J Brand Denim Suit Project

Otis alumna Angie Furlong (’83 Fashion Design), shown on the far right, is a Senior Designer for J Brand and the mentor for this year’s collaboration between the denim powerhouse and Otis College students. The direction is to have students create “The Modern Suit”, an androgynous denim jacket and pant focused on fine tailoring.

“My style when I’m designing is a lot more bohemian, more free-spirited, and colorful,” says Kat Strait, a senior in the Fashion Design program. “I wanted to challenge myself and attempt to do a more tailored, serious mentor project. I wanted to try more intense construction and while it was scary to take on, it turned out to be a really great learning experience.”

All of the mini-collections currently being created will be on display at the 2016 Benefit & Fashion Show on May 7th. This is an important event, especially for senior students, who are able to show their talent to the best in the Fashion industry before graduation. Even with one job offer already on the table, Kat shows no signs of slowing down, “I’m really using this year to challenge myself by going outside my comfort zone.”
