Kohl King was born in India and immigrated to the United States at an early age; she has lived in over six states and several more cities. She earned her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Georgia, an MFA from the University of Arizona and studied Conceptual and Installation Art at The Cooper Union School, New York. Trained as a painter, she now works in sculpture and installation. On a recent visit to her Baldwin Hills studio we found her working on several installation series. In the series, “I Fixed You”, she uses discarded railroad ties and flesh colored bandages which she says reference the figure and how we mend ourselves after painful experiences. She also likes to work with four distinct colors of glitter paint which refer to different aspects of Sanskrit knowledge. Currently King lives in the heart of Los Angeles and is a full-time instructor at the Art Institute of California, Santa Monica.
