Michael Massenburg is a mixed media artist whose work brings together the figure, music, abstraction and text. Born in San Diego, he moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago. He credits Los Angeles, with its rich and diverse culture, for the way his work has evolved, which you can see in much of his collage and mural work. He has been in his current studio for three years, which is located at the Beacon Arts Building in Inglewood, where we found him excitedly talking about his involvement in the restoration of the Forum – a landmark in Inglewood. He also spoke passionately of the influence of artists Romare Bearden and Charles White and the collaborations he has enjoyed with other artists. Using powerful imagery and text, set against beautiful earth tones, together with a looseness that draws the viewer in to look closer, he creates a visual smorgasbord.
