How to Download Ebrary Books to an iPad

Good news: We can now download entire books from Ebrary to mobile devices!

Bad news: It ain’t easy.

Wayne Bivens-Tatum has created an illustrated guide to the 18-step process. 18 steps! Basically you have to create accounts on Ebrary and Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), download the ebook to your computer, and then transfer it to your iPad. The guide doesn’t even cover that last bit.

Of course, there are currently no apps for Ebrary and ADE, so you will have to use a truly 3rd party app, such as Bluefire Reader, to access the ebook on your mobile device. Check out this list of supported devices.

1. I have not yet tested the process.

2. Note that these ebooks come drenched in DRM (digital rights management). For your amusement, here is a comic strip by The Brads about Why DRM Doesn’t Work.

Update 12/5/11: Here are directions from eBrary on how to download an entire e-book to an iPad. It does assume that you already have an eBrary account.
