Updates on Library Databases

Hope that everyone is enjoying the term. We have some announcements about the research and subscription databases available to the Otis community. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know.

Going, Going, Gone

World Folklore and Folklife

Our subscription to World Folklore and Folklife is ending on December 31, 2014. Please plan ahead.

Oxford Art Online

Our subscription ended on September 30, 2014. Despite being an excellent resource, it was not getting much use.

We have a two month trial to the entire JSTOR collection. Please be advised that the entire JSTOR collection is extremely expensive and there is probably no scenario where we would be able to afford it. We currently only pay for Arts & Sciences III. Still, if there happens to be one of the other collections with valuable content, at some future point we might buy another collection. Let us know what you think.

ebrary & Adobe Digital Editions 4.0

In October, it came to light that Adobe Digital Editions 4.0 had some major privacy loopholes. It sends LOTS of unencrypted user data to Adobe about ebook usage within ADE and within other ebook apps on that device. There is an updated version, ADE 4.0.1, that fixes some of the flaws. Earlier versions, e.g. ADE 3.x, are also secure.

If you download ebooks from ebrary onto your computer or laptop, please update to Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.1. Please note that the version number may still appear as 4.0 even when you are running 4.0.1.

This does not affect ebooks downloaded to a tablet or mobile device, since that requires Bluefire or another app.
